April and Lou La Cava Co-Chairpersons For St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital Foundation Heroes Ball

April and Lou La Cava were honored to be co-chairpersons of the 2019 St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital Foundation Heroes Ball, Journey to Candy Land. This year’s Heroes Ball raised more than $500,000 toward the purchase of virtual reality technology for the St. Joseph’s Children’s Heart Institute that will give cardiac surgeons the ability to plan and prepare for complex heart surgeries in a way never before imagined. This technology can help save the lives of many children who need complex heart surgery. The Ball also honored community hero Dr. Kiran Patel. Dr Patel has become one of Tampa’s most prolific philanthropists. The impact of his generosity has positively impacted our community, the nation and the world. La Cava & Jacobson was proud to be a major sponsor of this fabulous event. Lou and April would like to personally thank all of the other sponsors and everyone who attended the Heroes Ball for their generosity in making this event such a fabulous success. It was their privilege to serve as co-chairs.

La Cava & Jacobson Support Daniel Plasencia, M.D. and the Complex Clinic

I would like to thank all of our employees and our clients for putting us in a position to give back to the community. The Daniel J. Plasencia, M.D. Children’s Chronic Complex Clinic coordinates care for children with complex medical issues including premature birth, cancer, blood diseases, congenital disorders, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, heart disease and autism. These children may have developmental delays in cognitive, motor and speech skills. It acts as a central “medical home” for chronic complex children and facilitates care among all medical specialists. The Clinic can also provide for the psychosocial needs of these children and family support. Being able to provide one of the exam rooms at this wonderful facility is truly an honor. We could not do it without the hard work of our employees and the trust and support of our clients.

Thank you!

Louis J. La Cava

Tabraue v. Dostors Hospital – 3rd DCA
In this wrongful death case, the Court held that there was no non-delegable duty existed in the context of a hospital providing non-negligent emergency care to patients via common law, statutes, express contracts or implied contracts. In rejecting the argument that a patient’s admission to an emergency room creates an implied contractual relationship with the hospital, the Court disagreed with contradictory holdings of the 4th District Court of Appeal and certified conflict.

Sentz and Geico v. Tracy – 5th DCA
In this case, the plaintiff was awarded attorneys fees and costs as a result of the defendants’ denial of requests for admissions. The requests sought an admission that the defendants acted negligently. The 5th District reversed, holding that requests for admissions that go to ultimate issues are improper.
